MacBook (late 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.5) Posted on Nov 7, 2008 6:12 PM Reply I have this question too ( 600 ) I have this question too Me too (600) Me too. I have around 60 movies on my 2012 MacBook Pro. ITunes Movie playback is spotty. Video freezes up during playback randomly. I have used up my amount of 'Reauthorized Downloads' and do not want to factory reset my Computer because I have over 250 GB of data in iTunes and only a 128gb iPhone 6 and a Non-Functional 250gb Classic iPod. This allowed me to use the OLD app store to download the proper installer. My struggle: A prohibitory symbol on my late-2011 Macbook Pro after erasing. I could not re-install the OS using any of the recovery mode options (command, R, option). I tried them all and a download was always missing despite being connected to the internet.

When I am downloading large files, I was just wondering if it is possible to have my MacBook continue to download the file when I close my laptop or put it into sleep mode?

No. Sleep stops all activity.
Does it still download? What's the best way to do this?

Use Display Sleep, or just wait for the file to finish downloading before you sleep the mac. (Set it up by going to >System Preferences...>Exposé & Spaces>Exposé. Select 'Display Sleep' as one of the Hot Corners. To sleep the display, just go to that corner.)

try an SMC reset but first try these:

Before Resetting the SMC

Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.

  1. Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
  2. Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
  3. Restart your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosingRestart.
  4. Shut down your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.

If your Mac appears to be running normally but isn't responding, force the computer to shut down by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds. Note: You will lose any unsaved work in any open applications. For Mac portables experiencing issues related to the MagSafe power adapter and/or battery, try:

  1. Unplug the MagSafe power adapter from the Mac and the wall power socket for several seconds.
  2. Shutdown the Mac. Physically remove and re-insert the battery (if it's removable) and startup the Mac.

If the issue is still not resolved after following the troubleshooting items above, an SMC reset may be necessary.

if you told us the model number of your machine I would be able to tell you which SMC reset to do. assuming you have one with a battery door that you can remove without unscrewing anything, then do this one:
