Microsoft has put out the free download of Office 2016 for Mac public preview, without any Office 365 subscription required. The new software includes support for Retina displays, iCloud syncing, and looks like the versions of Office currently available on Windows and mobile.
Instead of downloading the whole Microsoft Office free alternative suite, you can get just the word processor, for example, or just the spreadsheet program. There's also a portable version on the download page called Blade Runner. Start quickly with the most recent versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and OneDrive —combining the familiarity of Office and the unique Mac features you love. Work online or offline, on your own or with others in real time—whatever works for what you’re doing. Microsoft Office suite of applications (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive for Business, Outlook, Publisher +, Access +, Skype for Business) can be downloaded from the Office 365 portal. The latest versions of Office software can be installed on multiple Windows, Mac, and mobile devices, and you can save files in your Office.

Step 1: Download the Install
Once you download the 2.6GB file to your downloads folder, click on the Office Preview Package to get started. You will be guided through the necessary steps to install this software.
Tip: I had to upgrade my OS X because you can't install Office for Mac with any version of OS X below 10.10. To see my tutorial on how to upgrade your OS X go here.
I also had some internet interruptions on my initial download to my downloads folder and had a hard time opening the package because it did not download the full 2.6GB. Make sure that you fully downloaded the package.
Step 2: Read and Agree to Licensing Agreement
The software license agreement comes in many languages, this one in English. Once you read the agreement, you will have scrolled to the bottom. Click continue to agree.
Step 3: Agree to the License Agreement to Begin Installation
You will then be prompted to agree. Once you do you will select what users of your computer will have access to the software to select the destination for install. You will need 5.62GB of free space to install. Select and click continue.
Step 4: Install Office for Mac
I want all users of my computer to be able to access Office and made sure to have the available space. Now I am ready to install. I click install. I had to wait a few moments for the installation to complete. Then I was notified that the installation was successful. And my installation is complete.

Macbook users all know the pinch they felt from having to buy that pricey Microsoft Office suite. But as Microsoft works to release its Office 2016, they are offering you a peek — free of charge.
This is the first time Microsoft Office suite has had a new release since 2011.

The preview version of this suite will come fully packed with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook to every desktop OS user. Sure, it doesn’t have the final version, and there’re sure to be some updates, but this is the chance to get your paws on Microsoft Office for free while you still can.
You will need Snow Leopard or higher to run the suite, but with the new range of Macbooks being released, that shouldn’t remain a problem for long.
The biggest update from this most recent version of Office is all in the design. Microsoft Office for Mac has had a problem of looking too dated when it comes to the Mac version, while its preferred Windows partner has that squeaky-clean, new feeling. Some people have stated that this latest version is now on par, or perhaps similar, to the Office 365 for Windows, with new flat design icons that were introduced in OS X Yosemite.
The Outlook included in the bundle is already available as a stand-alone app, while OneNote is not included in the bundle and will continue to operate as a separate download (for free) directly from the Mac App Store.
